Black & Indigenous Mexicans: A coming together on food, untold history and rich identities at the Texas Table with community, backyard style eats and conversations.

There is so much untold and uncovered history of the African, Mexican and Indigenous diasporas, especially that within the lineages of slavery and colonization. Food can signal a variety of possibilities within history, and in this event and episode, we examine the melding and the migration of Black Seminoles in Austin and into Mexico as well as the heritage of Mexican Indigenous people in Central Texas. In this panel interview we uncover their connecting points, foodways, and how they are preserving and continuing their culture and history.

Panelists include the following:

Barbara Reaves is an Austin, Texas resident and proud descendant of the Black Seminoles, with family roots tracing back to the historic Black Seminole community of Nacimiento de los Negros in Coahuila, Mexico. She is dedicated to preserving and sharing her family's rich heritage, honoring the resilience, cultural traditions, and legacy of Black Seminole communities across generations.

Miles Bloxson is a seventh-generation Central Texan, is an award winning journalist, producer and KUT Austin host whose work centers on storytelling that elevates culture, community, and lived experience. She is also the creator and host of Miles to Mogul, a conversation-driven series exploring the mindset, lessons, and inner work behind purpose-driven success.

Irasema Mazacoatl Reza Bailey is a first generation Mexican American. She is a traditional healer and teacher, somatic bodyworker, full spectrum doula and sacred space holder and founder of the Birth Comadres Collective.
